We already know that Padma Lakshmi’s a jack-of-all-trades. The former model hosts Bravo TV show Top Chef, writes cook books, does a ton of charity work, hangs out with cool people in the front row of fashion shows, has a fine jewelry line, and now, she’s designed a line of costume jewelry for HSN.

PL by Padma Lakshmi, which will debut with a television broadcast on March 22, all retails for under $90—prices that are drastically cheaper than her fine jewelry line that it’s based on. “This is a younger relative of the fine line I’ve been doing for a few years. I wanted to do something on a larger scale that I was never able to do with the fine line,” Lakshmi told us at an HSN press preview yesterday afternoon. “It’s bigger, and more 2013 than 2009.”

Comprised of statement collars, long layer-able strands, stackable bangles, and dangly earrings, PL is a veritable hodge-podge of Lakshmi’s favorite historical fashion moments. When speaking to her one thing was clear--this girl loves herself a reference. Ready?

“It is very inspired by that '80s Chanel layered bijoux look combined with a bit of '70s like that iconic Veruschka imagery with the YSL collection… Calder is also always a large inspiration with me. I like movement, I don’t want something ornamental that’s just sitting there,” Lakshmi explained, “I collect a lot of Chanel bijoux so I was very inspired by it and to do something that had our DNA which is a gentle nod to my heritage from India.”

But we're not done. There’s a nature element too, she explained. “It was also about taking very organic shapes like if you notice this [points to a cast-metal necklace], these are rock formations that just occur naturally.” Also present is a budding orb shape that’s elemental in all of Lakshmi’s jewelry, “The pod shape is very integral to the line, it’s also very front-row-and-center to the fine line too.”

Lakshmi will debut her designs to the public with a two-hour broadcast next month. In the meantime, you’ll probably spot her taking in some shows at New York Fashion Week, viewing new collections from her favorite labels like Costello Tagliapietra and Naeem Khan. So what advice does the former catwalker have for this season’s runway newbies? “Drink lots of water and keep some almonds in your purse.”
