Ralph Lauren Fall 2013: From Russia With Love

Ralph Lauren loves a theme. It's always a fun game to try to guess what it's going to be each season: The American West? English Countryside? The Far East? Toreador? This season Lauren went to Russia, a theme that would have seemed even more fitting just days ago when the streets were blanketed with snow.

This season Lauren went to Russia, a theme that would have seemed even more fitting just days ago when the streets were blanketed with snow. It was a Russia inflected with Lauren's signature Americana, of course (you only had to look up at the antler chandeliers to be reminded). You could see that essence of Ralph Lauren in the cozy cable knits, the wide leather belts, and more streamlined leather coats. Russian flourishes were evident in jewel toned velvet day dresses and long skirts (unintentionally, these looks were also a nod to my bat mitzvah dress from the early '90s, holler Limited Too!), embroidered folk-arts-y vests, and most of all in the evening wear. Lauren's finale gowns, all of them topped off by ushankas, were truly fit for a Czarina--or a Hollywood starlet. That champagne tulle beaded number with matching shearling that closed the show will certainly turn heads on the red carpet.
