Carine Roitfeld Breaks Vow to ‘Never Use a Cigarette’ in Latest CR Fashion Book Editorial

It’s been a year and a half since Carine Roitfeld vowed to “never use a cigarette again in any shoot,” but it looks like the editrix may have already forgotten her declaration.

Roitfeld explained her newly anti-tobacco stance to Vogue back in August 2011 saying:

“If your girl is smoking a cigarette, [your readers] can say, Oh, my God, it’s smart to smoke a cigarette, it’s good for the look, so I’m going to have one, too. And it’s totally stupid. It’s an easy solution to make a picture more interesting, but it’s not the only solution. And now it’s like, forgive me for all these cigarettes I’ve put in all these issues.”

The latest issue of CR Fashion Book, however, has included not one, not two, but three death sticks in an editorial called “Once Upon a Dance.”

Photographed by Kacper Kasprzyk, starring Daria Strokous and dancer David Hallberg, the story shows Strokous as a “fearless instructor” directing Hallberg through the steps. She typically does this with a cigarette hanging from her fingers or lips. Oops.

To be fair, Roitfeld lasted longer than I thought she would as the ciggy was a staple prop during her tenure at Vogue Paris. And we suppose every nicotine addict is entitled to a relapse or two. Plus, Strokous plays the part to perfection, and when we think about it, it’s hard to imagine an editorial like this without a cigarette or two.

Hmm. Perhaps it was an innocent oversight? Looks like we’ll have to wait for the next issue to find out.
