Word of Nicola Formichetti leaving Mugler only broke yesterday, but the rumors about where he’ll go next are already swirling.
According to Page Six, “sources” say Formichetti is about to be named Creative Director at Diesel. When reached for comment, a spokesperson for Diesel would only say “no comment.”
That’s not exactly a denial–and there might be some truth to this one. If anything, Formichetti and Diesel would be a good fit.
Formichetti is already a fan of the brand. He sat front row at the Diesel Black Gold show this past fashion week, and has been snapped wearing the brand. He was also recently photographed hanging with Diesel founder Renzo Rosso at an Edun fashion party during Paris Fashion Week.
Rosso, a newly minted billionaire, is the President of OTB, which owns Diesel, as well as Maison Martin Margiela, Marni, and Viktor & Rolf, so the fact that the two were seen hanging together is not exactly proof. However, of all the brands Rosso owns, Diesel is the only one without a Creative Director. The Italian jeans company cut ties with former CD Bruno Collins, a French publisher and founder of urban and fashion magazine WAD, in 2011, and has yet to announce his successor. (Since Diesel Black Gold recently named a new creative director, Andreas Melbostad, to replace Sophia Kokosalaki, we don’t think Formichetti will be considered for that position.)
Formichetti Instagrammed a series of cryptic images today–a white, red, and black screen–captioned: “shut it down and restart again. Ready for this?/ restart the operating system #newlife #newfuel / Reinvent, Restart #newbeginning.”
We’ll have to wait and see what he’s hinting at.
So it seems this rumor is probably legit: WWD updated their post from yesterday saying that Formichetti “is expected to shortly reveal a major collaboration with Italian denim giant Diesel.” Though they added, Diesel declined to comment.
