He may not have been at Mugler very long but Nicola Formichetti sure did give us a lot to talk about in his two years as creative director of the brand. Lady Gaga walking the runway? Check. Kim Kardashian fashion makeover? Yep. A porn that doubled as a campaign film? He did that too.
There's no doubt Formichetti created a lot of buzzy, memorable moments at Mugler. Let's take a look at some of the highlights.
A Debut to Remember It's safe to say Formichetti believes in starting things off with a bang. The designer tapped none other than Lady Gaga, at the height of her fame, to walk in his debut show for Mugler fall 2011. Gaga not only walked the show--she worked it, smoking a cig onstage and humping a pillar.
That Porno He Made Formichetti is (and will probably remain) the only designer to ever inspire us to embed a video from Xtube. We just couldn't help it after he released the NSFW spring 2012 menswear short film, Brothers of Arcadia, on the free porn site. It was definitely...memorable.
You can watch the whole thing here.
Formichetti's next fashion video was a little more tame--and a lot less nude. In it, Lady Gaga reminds us not to mess with the Mugler girl--because she may eat you.
Making Kim Kardashian More Fashion-y
Unlike many designers, who allegedly wouldn't lend clothes to Kim for her Elle shoot, Formichetti wasn't afraid to work with the controversial star. He not only styles her for shoots but has also outfitted her in Mugler on a number of occasions.
He Brought Handbags to Mugler--Including One Inspired by Gaga's Ass
As everyone knows, pretty much the only way luxury companies make money these days is with their accessories. So, it was only a matter of time until Mugler launched its own line of handbags. Formichetti helmed the project and introduced a line of surprisingly wearable, ladylike bags. Though, of course, the inspiration was anything but(t): Apparently Lady Gaga's ass was the jumping off point for one of the styles.
The Cathy Horyn-Dissing Lady Gaga Rap
The spring 2013 show didn't just debut Formichetti's new handbags: It was also the premiere of Lady Gaga's new rap song 'Cake,' in which she spit (among other things): "Nicopanda got style trick, Cathy Horyn your style ain’t dick."
Avant-Garde and (at His Best) Wearable Clothes
Not all of Formichetti's collections were wearable, to put it mildly. That's not the point of the runway. But when they hit that sweet spot of boundary-pushing-yet-wearable--it was right on the bull's-eye, making them a hit on the runway and the red carpet.
