Both Offers and Young agree: The secret to youthful eyes lies in expertly groomed brows. Offers suggests getting brows professionally shaped and tinted to save time in the morning–or, if you’re not ready to commit, “Choose a flattering eyebrow pencil a shade or two lighter than your hair if it’s dark, and a shade or two darker if your hair is gray or silver.”
Says Young, “Eyebrows that are too thin add years onto your face. Thicker, more luscious brows are associated with youth and vitality.” He recommends brushing brows upwards to open up the face.
As far as eye makeup is concerned, it’s best to stay away from anything too intense. As per Young, “hard or heavy eyeliner can leave the eyes looking small.” Offers recommends wearing “neutral liner on the top lash line” in colors like brown or taupe. Wear mascara only on the top lashes for a subtle lift, as bottom lashes are prone to smear.
But don’t count out bright colors entirely. As far as following celebrity makeup trends, Young says older women can certainly still get in on the fun. “Try a sweep of eye liner in turquoise as opposed to a full lid,” he says. But Offers warns, “keep in mind that the images in magazines are often Photoshopped, red carpet looks are done by professional makeup artists, and flash photography blows out imperfections.” It’s best to draw inspiration without attempting to replicate exact looks.
