During the mud-splattered Governors Ball, we managed to catch up with our favorite crooner, Bethany Cosentino of the California surf pop group, Best Coast. Like the band’s sound, her aesthetic has a relaxed West Coast flair with a garage-edge.
With an Urban Outfitters collaboration line and a music video directed by Drew Barrymore, this lead singer is no Cali-slacking beach bum. Read on to hear what she had to say about her unique sound and style.
How would you describe your style?
I feel like it is kind of a combination of the ’90s meets the ’70s. I feel like those are the two eras that inspire me most.
What is your favorite band you’ve ever seen live?
The best band I’ve ever seen live is Beach House–they have an awesome live show.
What’s your favorite piece of clothing?
I actually feel like this Metallica jacket that I bought off of eBay. I feel like it is a comfort thing now.
What is your favorite video that you ever shot?
My favorite video that we ever did was the “When I’m With You Video” which is the first video we ever did. It is with a guy dressed up as Ronald McDonald playing my boyfriend. That was a really fun one to do. We also did a video directed by Drew Barrymore called “Our Deal”. It had a ton of awesome people in it like Chloe Moretz, Miranda Cosgrove and Donald Glover.
Who is your style icon?
Stevie Nicks for sure.
Tell us about what you’re wearing.
I’m wearing $15 dollar leopard print stretch pants and an American Apparel knit bra top, and boots that I’m really sad about because they are now damaged from mud.
How would you describe your sound?
Best Coast is kind of a mixture of a little bit of pop and a little bit of rock. We are inspired by California and surf rock bands. We are also inspired by Fleetwood Mac and The Eagles. We just play the music that we’d want to listen to.
