Jason Wu is pretty much on top of the world these days. He’s Michelle Obama’s go-to designer (and thus, now, more or less a household name); he dresses tons of other celebrities as well; he has a super cute diffusion line, Miss Wu; he has a cosmetics line in the works; and he was just named the new creative director of Boss womenswear.
It’s interesting to learn about the childhood of someone so successful and talented. Where did the Jason Wu we know today begin, and from whence did his brilliance blossom?
Well, now we know: From an unhealthy obsession with Barbies, of course! Wu told Interview (via Page Six) that he “would buy Barbies and take them apart and then remake their looks,” and that he had around 150 dolls that he would use for “hairstyling.”
He was also obsessed with RuPaul, sort of a darker-skinned, manlier human Barbie. “I thought that he was a she,” Wu said. “Later, of course, I found out that it was a man. But he was so tall and glittery and impressive, with the big hair… You know, a fashion-obsessed boy would be into that.”
It’s true. Now all fashion-loving, Barbie and drag queen-obsessed young boys know that they’re on the right path.
