New blog Part Nouveau, or ‘partly new’, delves into fashion history to showcase the inspiration–be it art, photography or design–behind some of today’s biggest fashion moments. It’s fascinating and impossible not to get lost in, so we asked the site’s founder, Lilah Ramzi, to give us a little history lesson each week.
Irving Penn’s expansive oeuvre is comprised of masterful fashion, celebrity and still-life photography built over an outstanding seven decade career. Towards the end of the photographer’s enduring career, Penn would produce a greater number of beauty shots and still-lifes, such as his 1995 image Bee (A), a variant of the more well-known image Bee on Lips. Perhaps contributing to the debate on Lana Del Rey’s suspiciously plump lips, of which she denies artificial enhancement, photographer team Sean+Seng photographed a bee perched on Del Rey’s full lips for Interview Russia’s February 2012 issue, much like Penn’s famous image.
