Well pliéd, New York City Ballet.
Fashion and ballet have long enjoyed an undefined relationship. Ballet has inspired countless fashion collections and editorials, while fashion designers have embarked on numerous collaborations with ballet productions–including Rodarte’s Black Swan costumes and New York City Ballet‘s partnerships with Valentino to Altuzarra, to name a few. And ballet season opening galas are always well-attended by the fashion crowd. Fashion Week even takes place at Lincoln Center (the official home of the New York City ballet) for chrissakes.
And this fall, the link between the city’s fashion industry and ballet culture will get a little stronger. New York City Ballet announced yesterday that it will hold a very fashion-focused fall gala on September 19. Three choreographers will debut ballets each in collaboration with a prominent designer: Benjamin Millepied (Natalie Portman’s husband) with Iris Van Herpen; Justin Peck with Prabal Gurung; and Angelin Preljocaj with Olivier Theyskens. Sarah Jessica Parker, a fixture on the ballet scene, will chair the event.
All in all, we think this partnership is en pointe (see what we did there?), and can’t wait to see this pas de deux between fashion and ballet continue.
