Banana Republic is really stepping up their designer collaboration game. A few months ago, the retailer announced that a tie-up with Kate Middleton-beloved brand Issa would hit stores in August, and today brings news of a collab with L’Wren Scott.
It might be Banana Republic’s most ambitious collaboration to date. According to a release, the holiday collection, which will hit stores December 5, consists of 50 pieces including apparel and accessories, “ranging from sequin party dresses and bejewelled cardigans, to feminine, tailored jeans, lace dresses and pencil skirts.”
“It was hard to edit [the collection],” Scott, aka Mick Jagger’s girlfriend, told WWD of the capsule. “We did more than we even expected.”
Scott and Banana Republic also created three original prints for the project: A lip print, a peony print, and a candy stripe, which will be featured on everything from pajama sets to blouses to handbags.
Scott said she’s been approached by other retailers to do collaborations, but that she chose Banana Republic because it’s “somewhere [she] used to shop.” You know, like, when she was a pleb.
Of course, Scott’s own eponymous line, known for its tailored-to-a-t form-fitting dresses, rings in at almost couture price points (a blouse is $1,350; a sheath dress, $3,200).
It was the designer’s couture sensibility that was both a challenge and an asset for Banana Republic.
“She’s much more couture than we’d ever be,” said Simon Kneen, creative director and executive vice president of design of Banana Republic. “She would bring jewels as inspiration for buttons. It was interesting for us to take that and make it much more affordable.”
Needless to say, none of Scott’s priceless jewels actually made it into the collection. Prices range from $39.50 to $165, for apparel and $39.50 to $198 for accessories.
Now, we wonder if the collection will be a hit with unfaithful women…
