It’s summer! And that means on Fridays, everyone should be sneaking out of work a little bit early to go on a weekend jaunt or grab a drink on a sunny rooftop. The fashion industry, which works very hard, also knows a thing or two about how to cut loose. In our weekly Summer Friday column, we catch up with industry insiders to find out what they do, where they go, and what they bring with them when they escape the daily grind. Last week we went on a journey with Harper’s Bazaar’s own Laura Brown. This week we go on vacation with celebrity hair colorist Rita Hazan.
Beyoncé. Katy Perry. Jessica Simpson. Those are just a few of hair colorist Rita Hazan’s A-list clients, who no doubt keep the sought-after hair maestro busy with their ever-changing ‘dos. When she’s not flying from country to country lending her magical touch to various fashion campaigns, or starting hair color trends via her clients (remember Perry’s pink, blue, and purple hues?!), she’s working out of her high-end salon on Fifth Ave–a go-to destination for celebs and editors alike–and developing her product line, available at Sephora and QVC.
So it’s safe to say Hazan is a very, very busy woman. Yet the travel-minded colorist still manages to carve out time to get away for a little while. From her packing tips to her tales of haphazardly driving up and down Greece (and getting in a car with a stranger!), Hazan tells us all about her travels.
What’s your packing style?
Because I travel so much for work, I am a fast and compact packer. I have all of my toiletries ready to go in a case. I learned to pack smart and not bring too much—just good pieces.
Is it okay to look like a tourist on vacation?
Sure if you feel it, go for it!
What’s the most daring thing you’ve done while abroad?
Hitched a ride with a stranger in Morocco to take me to the Souk. That was not very smart.
What’s the one vacation moment you’ll never forget?
I missed a flight once, and ended up staying an extra day and having the ultimate spa experience—so nice. Another was when I was in Greece and we rented a car. We forgot to say automatic and we got a manual car. I cannot drive at all and my friend was not very good at manual and Greece is full of mountains. It was very scary and we went back and begged for an automatic. They found the last one on the island!
What’s your favorite purchase while on vaca?
My jewelry from India is so amazing!
What’s the sexiest thing about summer?
The heat! And drinking cold specialty drinks while dining outside.
Who’s the one person you always travel with?
Aimee—we’ve been friends for over 20 years and she’s the manager of my front desk. She’s easy, fun, and loves to travel as much as I do.
What’s your new song of the summer?
I don’t know about my fave overall song, but this week I like “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke featuring T.I. and Pharrell
