That diversity in mainstream fashion is lacking is not exactly news. So, Harper's Bazaar is doing its part by going global with an "homage to the diversity of women" fashion spread conceptualized, cast and styled by the mag's Global Fashion Director Carine Roitfeld.
Roitfeld tapped longtime partner in crime Karl Lagerfeld to photograph her third Harper's Bazaar fashion portfolio, "Singular Beauties," which stars a mixed bag of ladies (hence the diversity angle) including Scarlett Johansson, Dakota Fanning, Lily Collins, Carmen Dell’Orefice, Zoe Kravitz, Karen Elson, Candice Huffine, Grimes, Gabourey Sidibe, and more. Surprisingly absent: Roitfeld's recent favorite Kate Upton.
The images remind us a bit of Roitfeld and Lagerfeld's last high-profile collaboration: The Little Black Jacket, with models of all ages posed alone and somewhat dramatically against black backgrounds.
But the sheer variety of model size, shape, age and race is unlike anything we've seen from a mainstream fashion glossy in a while--maybe ever.
The spread will run in 45 editions of Harper's Bazaar, including the first ever German and Japanese editions, for September.
