Forget About the Song of the Summer, This Is the Dress of the Summer

Competition for the "song of the summer" is pretty steep this season. There's that Daft Punk song, that sexy song by Alan Thicke's kid, and then there's another one. But honestly, I don't remember what it is because I've never been a close follower of pop music. And also because I'm way more interested in the "dress of the summer."

Competition for the "song of the summer" is pretty fierce this season. There's that Daft Punk song, that sexy song by Alan Thicke's kid, and then there's another one. But honestly, I don't remember what it is because I've never been a close follower of pop music. And also because I'm way more interested in the "dress of the summer."

That's right, the dress of Summer 2013. Every summer has one. A few years back—I'd say 2007—it was a washed-silk sack dress from Calypso St. Barth that came in a gazillion jewel-toned colors. And last year, you couldn't enter a major subway station or walk down Broadway in SoHo without spotting one of Issa's form-flattering wrap dresses--which also came in a gazillion jewel-toned colors. (Blame Kate Middleton--the brand skyrocketed in popularity after she wore a blue Issa wrap dress in her official engagement portrait.)

We checked in with style sharing app Pose, which has over two million users, to find out which dress has been shared and liked the most this summer. Alisa Gould-Simon, Pose's Co-founder and VP of Creative and Partnerships, tells us that it's unquestionably this tropical print dress from Zara (it's sold out and all over eBay now).

And even though it's not a dress, I'd say this ubiquitous skort from Zara certainly deserves runner-up status. I even saw Gould-Simon herself wearing it earlier this summer. (Hat tip to my girl Natalie Matthews for calling out the Zara skort in July.) At this point, it should be called the blogger skort, because every blogger seems to own it.

But within our little fashion industry community, a few dresses stand out. After polling several friends and colleagues—okay, maybe I just asked Leah—I've determined that there are two major contenders for this year's dress of the summer.

I know at least six fashion industry people who own J.Crew's "Suncation" dress—which you can currently buy on sale for $229—-including Leah and me. (And if you find it in the store, it's likely to be cheaper. We each paid under $100.) The second is Reformation's long dress with cut-out sides. The current style is called the "Fiore" and can be yours for $288, but designer Yael Aflalo has done several versions of this silhouette. Jake Gyllenhaal's new girlfriend, Alyssa Miller, has worn it, as have Karlie Kloss, and countless fashion editors.

What's your nomination for the dress of the summer? Tell us below. Because really, we're actually interested in what you think. Especially about this.
