On Vacation with Designer Rebecca Minkoff

It’s summer! And that means on Fridays, everyone should be sneaking out of work a little bit early to go on a weekend jaunt or grab a drink on a sunny rooftop. The fashion industry, which works very hard, also knows a thing or two about how to cut loose. In our weekly Summer Friday column, we catch up with industry insiders to find out what they do, where they go, and what they bring with them when they escape the daily grind. Last week we went on vacation with Esquire’s own Wendell Brown. This week we go on vacation designer and mommy Rebecca Minkoff.

Rebecca Minkoff sure is having a busy year. The New York-based designer just launched her first denim line, was awarded the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award along with her brother Uri, and is now participating in a Tumblr contest along with Nordstrom to find the next great artist, model and photographer. When the mommy of one isn’t designing the latest lust-worthy handbag or giving her time and energy to various causes, she’s off traveling with her hubby, actor Gavin Bellour. Read below as she tells us about her wedding, vintage shopping in Milan, and of course, her must-have packing essentials. How do you pack for vacation? I pack as minimally as possible. I try to take a carry-on wherever I go. Is it okay to look like a tourist on vacation? If you’re in a place with a lot of walking, definitely! What's the most daring thing you've done while abroad? I’ve eaten some pretty weird things while abroad--does that count?

What's the worst thing that's ever happened to you on vacation? A couple of years ago, I was in Milan with one of my best friends. I'll just say, the vintage shopping is always worth a risk to me. Italian fashion, like the wine, only gets better with age, so I take advantage of every moment to feast my eyes on la moda vintage. Four suitcases of treasures later, my bestie and I missed our train from Milan to Bologna. We ended up sleeping in the station and found a dark, damp corner, probably wet from the tears of those who missed their trains before us.

What's one moment that you will never ever forget? My wedding. Everyone I love traveled to Italy and stayed in the same house for a weekend.

Who is your travel buddy? My husband and son.

What has been your favorite purchase while on vacay? It's a piece of jewelry I got in Asia.

What’s the sexiest thing about summer? Bikinis!

What’s your new song of the summer? “Get Lucky” by Daft Punk featuring Pharrell

What are you packing essentials? 1. Black bikini. 2. The Logan satchel. It's a comfortable satchel that can also be worn as a crossbody. 3. Sneakers. 4. My favorite pair of ripped jeans. 5. A white v-neck t-shirt. 6. The Wes moto-jacket. It's the perfect motorcycle jacket and goes great with jeans or over a dress.
