On Vacation with DJ Chelsea Leyland

It’s summer! And that means on Fridays, everyone should be sneaking out of work a little bit early to go on a weekend jaunt or grab a drink on a sunny rooftop. The fashion industry, which works very hard, also knows a thing or two about how to cut loose. In our weekly Summer Friday column, we catch up with industry insiders to find out what they do, where they go, and what they bring with them when they escape the daily grind. We started our series this season with Rachel Zoe, stylist, editor, and designer extraordinaire, had a blast with our favorites in fashion like Tao Okamoto, Bag Snob's Tina Craig, and Rebecca Minkoff among others, and now we're concluding our series with DJ Chelsea Leyland.

Lady about town and go-to fashion DJ Chelsea Leyland has solidified her status as an It Girl, thanks to the fresh beats--and even fresher outfits--she churns out week after week at the never-ending parade of fashion parties she attends.

The blonde Brit is a very wanted woman, profiled everywhere from Harper's Bazaar, Vogue, Style.com, the Wall Street Journal, and more. She's so beloved, in fact, that DKNY Jeans sponsored her 25th birthday bash just a few weeks ago.

When she isn't making sure everyone is rocking out on the dance floor, Leyland is off somewhere exotic, relaxing. She shared with us her love for collecting mirrors, how she once broke up with a boyfriend while abroad, and how she sleeps in the nude all summer long.

How do you pack for vacation? I always dress myself in my head so I don't miss anything. It goes something like this: underwear, bras, bikinis, socks, shorts, pants, skirts, boots, heels and so on. I'm very serious when it comes to packing and I always put things in pretty little bags to stay organized.

Is it okay to look like a tourist on vacation? No I don't think so--but sometimes it can't be helped. As I speak Spanish I always try to blend in when I'm in Spain or Ibiza but when I travel to Mexico it's pretty obvious I'm not from there.

What’s the most daring thing you’ve done while abroad? I used to hitchhike down the coast of southern Spain with friends when I was a teenager... pretty stupid if you ask me, but also a lot of fun.

What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you on vacation? Losing 15 rolls of films whilst traveling through Asia. Though there's a happy ending to the story: The rolls were found in lost property and I got them all back a month later.

What’s one moment that you will never forget? Splitting up with my first boyfriend during the first week of our trip to Asia. It was the cruelest thing I've ever done.

Who is your travel buddy? My French friend Emilie who is not only an amazing ballerina but also has the same taste for life as me. We always spend our trips in hysterics and talk about our holiday jokes all the following year--until we go on holiday again and make new ones.

What has been your favorite purchase while on vacay? The mirrors I always buy when I go to Mexico.

What’s the sexiest thing about summer? The way your skin glows and sleeping naked.

What’s your new song of the summer? "Maybes" by Mount Kimbie (James Blake remix)

What are your packing essentials? 1. EVE LOM facial cleanser. 2. Lucas' Papaw ointment. 3. Speakers to play music. 4. My We Are Handsome cat bikini. 5. A good book to read.
