It’s summer! And that means on Fridays, everyone should be sneaking out of work a little bit early to go on a weekend jaunt or grab a drink on a sunny rooftop. The fashion industry, which works very hard, also knows a thing or two about how to cut loose. In our weekly Summer Friday column, we catch up with industry insiders to find out what they do, where they go, and what they bring with them when they escape the daily grind. We went to Israel last week with eyewear designer Kerin Rose Weinberg of A-Morir. This week we’re heating things up (it’s still summer ok!?) with male model Cory Bond.
His name is Bond. Cory Bond.
It’s hard to miss Cory Bond while walking down the streets of New York City. The male model seems to pop up on most billboards and advertisements around town, from Guess and Cole Haan, to Michael Kors and Dolce & Gabbana.
A Southern gentleman from Nashville, when Bond’s not posing for Bruce Weber or traveling for sexy shoots, he’s spending time with his wife, the equally stunning Bekah Jenkins. The two even pose together sometimes. Aww…
Below, Bond tells us how he spends his off-days, which includes deep-fishing in Bermuda, paragliding off a cliff in Mexico, and driving fast cars while spending time with his other favorite woman: his grandma. Perfect man? Possibly.
How do you pack for vacation?
I travel/fly A LOT so I learned to travel fairly lightly, luggage wise (see the movie Up in the Air). And for summer vacations you don’t need a lot of clothing, so I plan for the days with just a few swim shorts and t-shirts. For the evenings I just brings a few nice shirts that won’t wrinkle very easily and some chinos. As far as shoes go: one pair workout shoes, one pair dress shoes, and some Havaianas flip flops. I throw in some Ray-Ban aviators and I can fit anything for a short trip into my leather Coach duffle bag for a quick escape! Use your two carry ons properly, if you have flight status, and board first!
Is it okay to look like a tourist on vacation?
I think for most of your trip that it’s okay to look like a tourist. But, you should ALWAYS have one or two outfits that you could dress up with. You never know who you are going to see or meet while out on vacation. Stay classy and don’t try too hard. You are on vacation after all, so relax!
What’s the most daring thing you’ve done while abroad?
I was on a trip to Yelapa, Mexico and for days I kept seeing these people paragliding off this HUGE mountain top. I’ve always wanted to do this and I just never had the nerve to do it. So on the last day of my trip I decided that morning that I was going to walk to the beach and see if I could find out any info about doing this. I found this crazy older man with long, white hair. I asked him and he said, “SURE, I’ll take you up for $100!” I chugged two margaritas and went to his house to pick up the gear. We hiked up the mountain and the sights were beautiful. Got to the top, put the gear on and waited for the wind to be just right…and we took off running and jumped! Best. Thing. Ever. Landed on the small beach and grabbed another margarita and some fresh ceviche. Perfect.
What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you on vacation?
I went deep sea fishing in Bermuda and got super seasick. The waves were gigantic and rolling non-stop. There just isn’t any good, fast remedy for seasickness. You just have to deal with it. That may have been the worst I can remember.
What’s one moment that you will never forget?
The time I drove my Me-Maw (my mom’s mom) to the beach in South Carolina. We drove ’cause she won’t fly from Nashville, Tennessee to Paradise Island, South Carolina. My Me-Maw is 80-years-old and had only seen the beach/ocean at night once, 40 years ago. I wanted to take her one more time. I got to take her sailing for her first time ever on this trip. She was like a person I had never met before in these moments. I love to take people to do something for their first time–I love the look on their faces! So the moment I will never forget is her standing knee-deep in the ocean, with her big red hat on and a huge smile!
Who is your travel buddy?
My wife Bekah Jenkins. She is always great company and is up for relaxing and is always up for a little fun in the sun!
What has been your favorite purchase while on vacay?
My Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Railmaster Watch with Chronograph and black dial.
What’s the sexiest thing about summer?
The sexiest thing about summer is the heat! It just puts people in a great mood and everyone is ready to enjoy life!
What’s your new song of the summer?
I’m friends with Nile Rodgers, an AMAZING guitarist and music producer. He plays on my favorite song of the summer, Daft Punk‘s “Get Lucky.”
What are your packing essentials?
1. My black Coach duffle bag. It holds the perfect amount of clothes and shoes.
2. My Bose QuietComfort 15 Acoustic Noise Cancelling Headphones. The moment I step on the airplane, they go on my ears!
3. Sunscreen–Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Cream+ SPF 50. I use the good stuff for my face!
4. I always bring my Clarisonic Mia. It’s a compact spin brush/cleanser that you use on your face. Keeps you clean and clear.
5. A comfortable pair of walking shoes. On vacation I stay active, so those shoes are a must.
6. My Omega watch. I always feel the need to be on time and wearing a beautiful watch is a classy thing to do. Think James Bond.
7. My passport and a few different currencies. I get last-minute bookings all the time, I never know where I may end up. I love that!
