While queuing to get into the Coop show — New Zealand fashion heavyweight, Trelise Cooper’s diffusion line — bits of pink puff balls floated around from a nearby cotton candy machine. Sticky and sweet, fluffy and fun. Trelise Cooper would later use the words “Free-spirited, cool, sexy, loves having fun” to describe the “Coop girl,” when speaking with us backstage.
The front-rowers fit right in with the whole cotton candy thing — many bloggers sported cute, My Little Pony-esque dyed locks, while others participated in tooth-achingly zany trend overdoses — a sea of male top-buns and a distracting fake flower hairpiece crowning a hot pink coif. Even the technology was trendy. Several bloggers snapped away with their DIY bedazzled Polaroid cams (#NEED), and there was also a Prada smartphone sighting — all of which would totally be in Clueless if there were to be a remake, am I right?
Speaking of which, the Coop AW13 collection totally equalled Dionne’s wardrobe on any given day, mixed with a side of Lisa Frank and Jawbreaker. With Yeezus blasting, the runway lit up like a Skittles commercial as models stomped down the runway clad in furry tops and shorts, open toe metallic platforms paired with patterned socks, bra-baring sheer tops, latex skirts and super straight hair tucked into metal chokers (!!!).
“It’s about all of the textures and patterns and different ways of using new textiles,” said Trelise. “I do four different labels and Coop’s the one that I can actually go all out on and not worry ‘is it gonna cover someone’s knees?’ With my other collections, I think about women’s bodies, and what they wanna hide and what they wanna reveal. Coop has no boundaries.”
We found ourselves kicking it with the designer backstage, where Cooper kindly welcomed our fan-girling out about the collection, but admitted to having not seen Clueless in ages. As if! She did, however, reveal that Miley Cyrus is a Coop girl and, personally, I think she would have been perfect to outfit Katy Perry on her Teenage Dream tour.
