Mara Hoffman's Pendleton Collab Is Not Very Pendleton-y

Mara Hoffman and Pendleton have both been pretty collaboration-happy lately, so it's only natural that the two have embarked on a collaboration together.

Mara Hoffman and Pendleton have both been pretty collaboration-happy lately, so it's only natural that the two have embarked on a collaboration together.

Well, not all that natural, actually, at least not for Pendleton. The Pacific Northwest-based heritage brand is known for its dark, thick patterned blankets and outdoor-ready outerwear, but its collaboration with Hoffman has yielded a range of sunshine-appropriate, brightly colored towels. As a Seattle native, I can attest that beach days are not typically an occasion to break out the Pendleton (in fact, they're rarely an occasion at all).

However, if Pendleton is going to break into the beach towel category, swimwear purveyor Mara Hoffman is the designer to do it with. Known for her vivid, quirky prints, Hoffman herself has hopped on the collaboration bandwagon quite a few times over the past couple of years. There have been Incase iPhone cases, Soludos shoes, a Pamela Love collar, a Free People capsule, bracelets with Shop Latitude, wearable tech with eBay and condoms with Proper Attire, to name a few.

Pendleton's collaborators include Nike, Lindsey Thornburg and Opening Ceremony.

When Hoffman was approached by Pendleton to do a collaboration, she tells us it was a "no brainer" since the two "obviously have similar aesthetics." She said she pulled references from her Resort 2014 swim collection to make the towels fit in cohesively with the suits. "You can head to the beach in your bikini and have a matching towel," she explained.

Both towels retail for $77 here.
