Barneys New York has long been our Uptown standby for shopping — okay, often just window shopping — with so many of our favorite designers in one place. But the retailer just announced that it’s found a downtown home, and it’s one that’s already played an important role in the brand’s history.
The new Barneys flagship, which will sit on 7th Avenue between 16th and 17th Streets in Chelsea, is actually in the former location as its historic Chelsea store — open from 1923 to 1997 (pictured above) — and will occupy much of the same space. The new Barneys will boast five floors and a whopping 57,000 square feet of shopping space when it opens in 2017. Earlier this year, the retailer revamped its Upper West Side location, and with its Co-Op locations in both SoHo and Brooklyn scheduled for overhauls in the coming years, Barneys looks poised for luxury retail domination.
The downtown location seems fitting, since so many high-end retailers — Balenciaga, Carven, Saint Laurent and Proenza Schouler, to name just a few — have built a strong presence in SoHo and its surrounding areas in recent years. We’ll keep you posted on the new flagship’s progress, and we can’t wait for the opening, which is sure to be one heck of a homecoming.
