Perhaps Vogue‘s thinking was: If we go safe with the cover star, we can go a little risky with the fashion.

It may be nowhere near spring (Hello, high of 28º), but it’s officially time to see spring fashion in magazines. And the fashion bible has chosen Phoebe Philo’s Spring 2014 offering to grace its January issue, as well as stunning actress — and now five-time Vogue cover star — Cate Blanchett to wear it. Craig McDean shot the cover.

Perhaps Vogue‘s thinking was: If we go safe with the cover star, we can go a little risky with the fashion. Blanchett looks stunning as always, and definitely very Vogue, but we can’t help but wish the glossy had gone with more of a wildcard — perhaps rumored cover girl Lena Dunham, whose new Girls season debuts next month — to kick off the new year, if only to mix things up a bit. Vogue has had a series of safe covers as of late — Sandra Bullock nabbed her fifth this year, too.

We guess we’ll have to settle for the use of more innovative fashion. While a Fall 2013 Celine look made the cover of Vogue UK earlier this year, we’re fairly certain Philo’s designs for the house have yet to cover the American edition (we’re waiting on a spokesperson to confirm). Head over to Vogue for the full spread, in which Blanchett also wears Michael Kors, Dolce & Gabbana, Nina Ricci and Giorgio Armani.
