Love her or hate her, we dare you to name a more prominent figure in the zeitgeist this year than Kim Kardashian.
When we start to comb the Internet for news relevant to our readers each morning, it seems that the reality star’s name is in headlines more days than it’s not. In 2013 alone, Kardashian covered some top-tier fashion titles — DuJour, CR Fashion Book, Elle, L’Officiel Hommes — attended the Met Gala in that floral Givenchy, allegedly broke bread with Anna Wintour, became a first-time mom while being ceaselessly photographed in her pregnancy (and post-pregnancy) outfits and, lest we forget, got engaged to Yeezus himself, Mr. Kanye West.
In 2013, Kardashian’s pull in the industry went beyond just landing a magazine cover (most likely because she’s a big name who can sell issues). Some of the most legendary names in the game sung her praises this year, and she’s seemed to garner a sincere following among the fashion elite — a group that isn’t known for being super-welcoming. Just today, Kardashian posted a photo of Carine Roitfeld herself sporting a T-shirt with Kim’s face (from the CR cover) emblazoned on the front. Here are a few choice quotes from industry leaders on Kardashian from the past year:
“She’s beautiful—and in fashion, that is a talent you know. She was also a very sweet person, a hard worker…She’s controversial, but so was Marilyn Monroe and I always like controversial people.” —Carine Roitfeld
“She came to set — and I always judge the person I’m going to photograph by how they are with my assistants and my crew — and she looked at each one and introduced herself. She was just so personable with everyone. She was wonderful. I really had the best time.” —Bruce Weber
“She is a really good friend, and I am very happy she came to the Met for the first time. I love Kim…She was the most beautiful pregnant woman I dressed in my career.” —Riccardo Tisci
While it’s easy to dismiss certain industry attention as a mere tactic to capitalize on Kardashian’s huge social media following (for example, the outpouring of designer gifts that baby North got for her birthday and for the holidays) and paparazzi attention, the weight the reality star carries in the fashion world truly seemed to move past this symbiotic relationship. Kardashian sat front row at a carefully selected bunch of Fashion Week shows in 2013, including Marchesa and Givenchy, unlike some other socialite-types who were seemingly everywhere during Fashion Month this year (read: Paris Hilton) in order to be seen.
Whether or not it has anything to do with West’s influence, or with the fact that she’s been styled by both Carine Roitfeld and Nicola Formichetti — who admitted in February that many fashion houses wouldn’t lend him clothes for Kardashian to wear — she’s shown major growth in 2013, with even the biggest style snobs looking to her for inspiration.
Looking ahead into the new year, we only see Kardashian’s star in the fashion world continuing to rise. She and West are planning what promises to be the Wedding of the Century, and she’ll likely wear a one-of-a-kind gown by a world-famous designer. Could 2014 bring the elusive Vogue cover she so desperately wants? It almost seems possible, unless this is one big industry-wide joke that we’re not in on.
Do you think the industry finally began to take her seriously in 2013? (Besides that George Condo Birkin, of course.)
