I never thought I'd buy a glittery nail polish because, despite what my serious case of One Direction fever might say to the contrary, I'm not 12-years-old anymore.

Still, my inner magpie sighed every time I passed a display of sparkling bottles, so during an impromptu Target trip (isn't that how the best purchases are made?) I picked up a bottle of this Essie Lux Effects topcoat. It's the holidays, so what better time to try glitter, right?

One coat leaves subtle sparkle and two is party-ready; if you want it to look super concentrated, though, you'd need more coats. I actually like slipping one coat on otherwise naked nails -- it's barely noticeable, but catches the light brilliantly. I've also tried it over a shimmery polish (meh) and plan to layer it over a darker color on the right occasion.

Essie LuxEffects in A Cut Above, $8.50, available at Zappos.
