Lauren's Refined Gray Tote

Spring may not yet be here, but the first of J.Crew's spring collection is here, which is the next best thing (or worst, if you want to go by my credit card statements).

I stopped into J.Crew's Prince Street store last week and the first thing I grabbed was a tote in soft pale gray leather, which J.Crew calls "dusty cobblestone."

I wasn't in the market for a new tote -- I bought a similar-sized tote from Madewell just a few months ago, which has held up brilliantly -- but I couldn't help myself: It so suits my everyday winter outerwear ensemble of grays, and something about it evokes the gray streets of London's Chelsea neighborhoods (and all those light-hued totes Kerry Washington carries on "Scandal"). I like, too, the perforated seam that runs down the bottom third of the bag, and the convenient little wristlet inside. Practically speaking, it's good for everyday use, roomy enough to hold my laptop, yoga clothes and a pair of heels.

What convinced me finally was the price tag -- for something so well-made and beautiful-looking, how could I leave without it?

J.Crew Downing tote in dusty cobblestone, $168, available at J.Crew.
