It’s a good week to be a Kate Upton fan. Yesterday brought us yet another Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue (flip-side) cover featuring the babely blonde, plus a fairly glorious spread and corresponding behind-the-scenes video of Upton bouncing around sans gravity. Now, we’re seeing a very different side of the 21-year-old — in a high-drama, fairy tale of an editorial from the upcoming issue of CR Fashion Book, out on Feb. 25.
Photographed by Karl Lagerfeld, the shadowy spread — entitled “Ferocious” — sees Upton in the “Beauty” role of Beauty and the Beast, opposite “beastly” (yeah, whatever) Brazilian model Marlon Teixeira, looking broody as hale. With her glossy red lips, Chanel jewelry and curled retro bob, Carine Roitfeld’s version of Upton is a world away from the tan, buxom bikini model we’ve become accustomed to lately — yet somehow, just as sexy. I mean, c’mon: This is Kate Upton.
Who would’ve guessed back in 2011 — when Upton was just a teen model who got famous for doing the Dougie on YouTube and somehow managed to land a cover of Sports Illustrated — that three years later, she’d end up fashion’s ultimate chameleon?
