When Mulberry posted slowing handbag sales at the beginning of this year, we wondered if the company might introduce a new celebrity-inspired style, in the vein of the successful “Alexa,” to drum up some excitement for the brand as it continues its search for a creative director. We even said we’d put money on spring 2014 campaign star Cara Delevingne being that celebrity. Turns out, we really should have put money on it.
Today, at a teased-about event during London Fashion Week (which was actually just a photocall promoted by Mulberry on social media — no press were invited), Mulberry unveiled a new bag range that is not only named for the British supe, but was also designed by her.
The bag is billed as a three-in-one: It can be worn as a backpack, over the shoulder or handheld. It comes in a variety of sizes, fabrics and colorways, including camo hair calf, black quilted leather and “silky” taupe leather.
Delevingne added personal touches to the otherwise classic styles: For instance, one limited-edition version features lion rivets inspired by her infamous finger tattoo. Apparently, the bags also feature a heart patch inside, inspired by another of her tattoos. Delevingne offered the following quote about who she expects will find the bag appealing: “My Granny will like this bag. She’s 102 years old. My five-year-old cousin will probably like this bag. He’s a boy.”
