Was "Black Velvet," the huge Alannah Myles hit from the early '90s, a source of inspiration for the designers who showed early on this Fashion Week? Probably not, but that doesn't change the fact that the decade's favorite fabric was everywhere.

Evening looks were jazzed up at Tadashi Shoji with chiffon seaming, while Hellessy covered its black velvet dress with a parka. Though the highlight had to be the high-luster panne velvet at Josie Natori. How luxe.
