Finally, this dreaded winter seems to be coming to a (sloooooow) end. Other than not wearing about a million layers, I can’t wait to ditch my socks for a good five months.

However, my bare feet -- and I am sure I am not alone here -- are looking pretty, well, less-than-pretty. So what can you do to help your feel get ready for spring? Here's a few simple at-home remedies.

Clean your nails (duh!)

Start by removing the remains of any nail polish and focus on getting every last bit off -- a Q-tip dipped in nail polish remover is best to get into the corners. If nails have been covered in dark polishes without having a break in between, and/or hidden under socks, they tend to go a little yellow. If this is the case, try using an exfoliator (like Dead Sea Essentials by Ahava's Invigorating Eucalyptus Sugar-Salt Scrub, pictured) to remove the dead skin and smooth the surface of the nail. Alternatively, try lemon juice and a nail brush or old tooth brush.

Soak your feet

Come on -- as if you need an excuse for a long soak in the bath. Soak your feet in a bath of warm water, Epsom salts and a few drops of oil -- coconut oil works wonders here. This will help soften the feet to make it easier to get rid of the dry skin and trim nails. Then use a pumice stone or your exfoliator again to work on those hardened areas.

Clean up your nail beds

It's always easier to trim nails when they are a little soft, so after your bath, give your nails a good trim and get rid of any hang-nails. Cut your nails straight across to ensure you don’t get any ingrown nails and then file the corners to get rid of the sharp edges.

Moisturize

I wouldn’t think of skipping moisturizing my face every day, but somehow my feet don't get the same treatment. So take any moisturiser -- it doesn’t have to be anything fancy! -- and focus on the rougher areas (generally your heels and soles). Be sure to treat your cuticles as well. This doesn’t have to be a specific cuticle oil; lip balm (like Rosebud Perfume Co.'s rosebud salve, pictured) works a treat, as does coconut oil.

Once feet are clean, dry, hydrated, tidy and smooth, they beg to be painted a lovely spring shade -- we're pining for Dior’s Vernis in nude pink. Just remember to let your nails breathe a little between polish changes to keep them healthy underneath. And once your socks are back on next fall, keep them unpainted until it's spring again.
