Because this isn’t Woodstock.

Jeans have never truly gone out of fashion since they became popular in the 1950s, though specific styles have been in and out of vogue. The most popular silhouette over the past few years has undoubtedly been the skinny jean, which, let’s face it, isn’t always the most flattering or easy to pull off. Lately, the fashion pack has been moving away from that old staple, opting for loose-fit "boyfriend" and high-waisted "mom" jeans instead -- natural, if you consider that fashion generally operates as a pendulum, veering from one extreme to another.

The newest silhouette to step into the spotlight is the wide leg jean. With so many advances made in tailoring and denim fabrication, newer styles -- and the most flattering -- lie somewhere between a flare and a bootcut. Just look to Paris. Women living in the City of Light have preferred a wide leg silhouette since Jane Birkin walked down the street pairing hers with a white t-shirt and straw basket. They balance out wider hips, elongate the body, and when worn correctly, shouldn’t drag along the ground fraying ends.

For some help in navigating how to wear this style -- because we don’t want to re-live the ‘70s -- here are five different ways to wear flared and bootcut jeans.
