Here in New York, a go-to uniform of basic black is standard even for the most fashion-forward women. Sure, it's classic and pretty hard to mess up, but without the proper styling it can fall into the "boring" category fairly often. However, with the right proportions and accessories — and with the addition of a glammed-up beauty look — there are few things that are more chic than an all-black ensemble.

This Valentina Kova gown that Julianne Moore wore to Monday night's Children’s Health Fund Annual Gala is the perfect example of just that. While the dress is extremely simple, the different textures in her black necklace, clutch and ankle strap pumps give her look dimension, and her red hair and berry lip provide some vibrancy. Moore has a knack for making even the most understated pieces stand out — recall that killer Rosie Assoulin jumpsuit she wore to the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic — and this is no exception. Plus, she was there to help kids in need. What's not to love?
