We may be celebrating our independence from the Brits today, but they kinda dress better.

There are certain designers and dress styles that are obvious choices for the red carpet, like unabashedly pretty Valentino frocks or Versace deep-V dresses or strapless column gowns by [insert name of designer here], but every now and then celebrities (and their stylists) branch out and pick something a little more editorial and fashion-forward from the runways.

This happened a lot this week. Keira Knightley, for instance, wore a dress by Simone Rocha, a buzzy British designer we've rarely (perhaps never?) seen on a celebrity. She wore an equally bold Chanel number to the Serpentine Gallery summer party. Meanwhile, Alexa Chung and Suki Waterhouse both wore dresses straight off the fall 2014 London Fashion Week runways, by Erdem and Burberry, respectively. And Kate Middleton wore hot pink, which is pretty exciting for her. We may be celebrating Independence Day, but it wouldn't hurt American celebrities to take a little inspiration from the Brits when it comes to red carpet dressing. Just sayin'.

Thank goodness we have Nicola Peltz, who's also been dominating the red carpet lately, and who paired a Stella McCartney bodysuit with a Dolce & Gabbana skirt -- a very rare instance of someone mixing designers in one look.
