The location for last year's Oscar de la Renta retrospective, the William J. Clinton Presidential Center in Little Rock, Arkansas, seemed unconventional to say the least, and certainly seemed like a one-time thing. But no: As it happens, presidential centers are De la Renta's favorite.
He's following up Arkansas with another trip down South, this time to stage an even larger retrospective exhibition at the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas, TX. “Oscar de la Renta: Five Decades of Style” will showcase more than 60 of his garments, many of them worn by Laura Bush, Hillary Clinton, Nancy Reagan, and other celebrities and Texan socialites. Jenna Bush's wedding dress will also be on display. The exhibition will be on view from July 19 to Oct. 5.
Perhaps the Bushes were jealous of the Clintons' newfound fashion cred, or De la Renta wanted to show that he does not favor one political party over the other, which is fair. Before the Obama administration arrived, De la Renta was a frequent dresser of first ladies; both Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush wore his designs on more than on occasion. Thus, it's safe to say this will be the last Oscar de la Renta exhibition hosted by a former president for a while, as Michelle Obama has yet to publicly wear his clothes.
