I love a roomy midi skirt. My closet is probably 90 percent basics, too many of them from J.Crew, and wearing a midi skirt is a simple and comfortable way to dress them up. If the fabric's right, you can wear them pretty much the whole year round.

The latest addition to my small collection is this navy and royal-blue striped skirt from the Outnet's private label, Iris & Ink. The skirt is made of polyester, but it doesn't look like it: It looks like medium-weight satin, and behaves that way too. Besides the color and material, what I like best about it is its structured bell shape: It curves around the hips and flares gently towards the hem, without clinging to any part of my hips or legs. Thus it will be easy to layer over tights come November.

In keeping with the skirt's monochrome palette, I wear mine with a navy cashmere crewneck sweater (J.Crew, natch) and a pair of matching Ferragamos. Later in the season, I'll add black tights and ankle boots and a navy faux fur-collared coat.

Iris & Ink "Aida" striped satin-crepe skirt, $195, available at the Outnet.
