Beauty tutorials are big on YouTube — a search for "makeup tutorial" and "hair tutorial" yields more than 5 million videos. In this weekly series, we put a mix of popular and under-the-radar tutorials to the test and show you what's best.

While watching a Charli XCX performance, I recently determined that the reason I never went through a bad girl phase is because I have good girl hair — silky, straight, and frankly, boring. (It was also because I was scared of disappointing my parents but for the sake of this story let's stick with the hair narrative.)

What makes Charli and her ilk seem so badass is that tousled, bedhead hair that implies maybe you just came from making out behind the bleachers during the pep rally. The problem is my bedhead isn't so much tousled, sexy, #wokeuplikethis hair so much as it is cowlicky, flat hair. Womp. Thankfully, I found the YouTube tutorial below, which walks you through faking that effortless bedhead look with a few basic styling products.

I might not be willing to don a cheerleader uniform with "SUCKER" across the front (I've passed those days, I think), but I will put in a little extra work to get that hair. Maybe it will be enough to add a hint of edge to my otherwise prim style.
