The red carpet portion of awards shows is fun because of all the dresses. But it can also start to feel redundant... because of the dresses. It's more than a little refreshing when someone breaks from the well-trodden mermaid gown formula and goes with something different.
Say, pants? How terribly modern!
Lo, the silver screen gods delivered in the form of not one but two excellent skirt-less outfits worn by Lorde and Emma Stone at the Golden Globes.
Following up on the billowy tuxedo she wore to the "Mockingjay" premiere, Lorde took things to a slicker place with a Narciso Rodriguez pant suit/crop top combo. You can definitely see the Taylor Swift influence in there — belly exposure (without revealing any bellybutton), red lipstick — but between the suit's loose cut and her slick, low ponytail, the final result is 100 percent Lorde.
Emma Stone, meanwhile, looks endlessly chic in a Lanvin jumpsuit with a swishy bow situated at her hip. Easy hair, slim fit and, as with Lorde, well-placed bling. Great.
So, ladies who attend awards shows, please consider adding some pants to your rotation now and then. With the right tailoring, it's million times better than a mermaid dress. We promise.
