We're starting to lose count of the number of major brands that have tapped older women to front their campaigns this season. There was Joan Didion for Céline, Joni Mitchell for Saint Laurent, Tilda Swinton for Nars... who else? Iris Apfel for Alexis Bittar.
Now 65-year-old modeling legend Twiggy has joined the party, having snapped up an ambassadorship with L'Oréal Professionnel UK. We advise you watch the promo video, because the lady is straight-up delightful. Plus, it's cool to hear her talk about getting her first highlights at age 16.
It's somewhat annoying to call casting older women a "trend" because that suggests it will fade out in the near future, but considering that many campaigns go to girls barely out of their teens, it is a break from how things have been — and that's a good thing. Even better is that none of the aforementioned women are shilling products overtly targeted at their age bracket — not even Twiggy with her color treatment spot, which very easily could have gone the "managing gray hair" route. The takeaway? That their looks are something to which anyone, even those youths, can aspire.
