Some things in life are so obviously well suited for each other, their harmony would be boring were it not also very good. Chocolate chip cookies and milk. "Real Housewives" and white wine. Carey Mulligan and Lanvin.
To be fair, Carey Mulligan could wear just about anything and we'd be into it, so long as she did that funny little downward squinchy smile of hers. But this navy column dress, which she wore to a New York screening of "Far From the Madding Crowd" on Monday, is especially good. The color is great against her (presently) chestnut hair, and it's elegant without being overwrought. It's also a look that would work well on a 29-year-old, or a 49-year-old, or a 79-year-old, which is a big part of Mulligan's appeal; you never get the sense that she's trying to play the young hot thing, despite being both young and hot. Can't you see your grandmother being into that big pearl necklace and cuff? I mean that in a good way.
The only caveat to this glowing review is that it's a shame her dress is wrinkled in the front. Ten points deducted, but Gryffindor still wins the House Cup.
