While August's oppressive heat can make one want to wear the lightest, airiest clothing available, this week's best dressed contenders made me want to pull out my most elegant, architectural frocks for a night out.

Kate Mara, who has smartly favored a feminine, gamine aesthetic to go with her newish pixie cut, wore a number of short, structured dresses, like a black leather Valentino number with dainty bows at the shoulders and a Dior vest dress, paired with voluminous shorts to create a wonderfully sculptural shape that still felt light.

Designer Rosie Assoulin, known for her boldly shaped pieces, provided Greta Gerwig with a stunning top that offered a new take on the peplum. "The Diary of a Teenage Girl" star Bel Powley won us over with her darling choice of a drop-waist Miu Miu dress, while Kiernan Shipka rocked a similarly sweet look by the same label. Meanwhile, her former "Mad Men" co-star January Jones seemed to be channeling Betty Francis with her modish Peter Pilotto dress.

Check out all that and the rest of the week's best dressed in the gallery below.
