This summer, I've developed a particular fondness for tent dresses. There is nothing easier to slip on for a lazy summer day — or fall, or winter, or spring day, for that matter — than a generously cut, waistless dress that hangs from the shoulders. But listen, I get it: tent dresses can often make you look like, well, a tent.
I happened upon a more streamlined alternative while browsing the racks at Aritzia last week. (Aritzia, for those of you who aren't familiar, is a vertically integrated Canadian retailer that's been steadily expanding in the U.S. over the past eight years, and opened up a store in Soho, where this dress was found, four years ago.) Made of a wrinkle-resistant black crepe, its gentle A-line, midi-length cut makes for a long, straight silhouette that's both very flattering and easy to wear. It's versatile, too — it can be belted and accessorized multiple ways, and layered over thin turtlenecks or under slouchy sweaters. Its simple crew neck is a nice foil for jewelry, and a keyhole cut-out in the back — its only significant design detail — makes for an elegant exit.
Wilfred "Pillet" dress, $165, available at Aritzia.
