For the past two decades, MTV's Video Music Awards have accomplished at least two things. The first, technically, is that it provides music videos with the televised recognition they deserve as an art form, or whatever. But it's the second feat that we'll be discussing today, and it's one that has successfully distanced the VMAs from every other awards show on the planet. The fashion, folks — the outrageously batshit clothing that is known to grace that red carpet year after year.

While some of the ridiculousness has been toned down in recent years, the VMAs are still as envelope-pushing as they were in the early days. While we shouldn't wait with bated breath for Rose McGowan to show up in a see-through sheath again, we can all rest assured that someone — probably this year's host, Miley Cyrus — will wear a nipple pasty or two.

In honor of the 2015 VMAs on Sunday, we've rounded up the 25 most memorable, racy and downright ridiculous looks from the past 20 years. Click through the gallery below to relive them all — and be sure check back here on Sunday for all your live red carpet updates.
