Fresh off the heels of New York Fashion Week's spring 2016 season, industry veteran Fern Mallis is adding a new role to her already accomplished résumé. As announced this morning in WWD, Mallis has been named executive adviser and consultant to Pier59 Studios, a 100,000-square-foot photography and multimedia studio within New York's Chelsea Piers. Mallis's appointment is effective immediately, with her first project being the planning of Pier59's 20th anniversary festivities on Oct. 26.
Mallis, 67, will reportedly work directly with Pier59's founder and CEO Federico Pignatelli, as well as fashion programming consultant (and 10-year IMG Worldwide alumna) Christina Neault. Mallis and Pignatelli's working relationship dates back to 1997 when New York's 7th on Sixth fashion shows temporarily migrated to Pier59 for a season.
While serving as the executive director of the Council of Fashion Designers of America from 1991-2001, Mallis is credited with creating 7th on Sixth — New York's first-ever Fashion Week — in Bryant Park in 1993. Mallis also hosts a conversation series at the 92nd Street Y called "Fashion Icons With Fern Mallis," which most recently hosted interviews with Iman and Victoria Beckham.
