As if pre-season collections aren't confusing enough, the window between fall and spring is not named after a time of year, but rather after a time-honored luxury leisure activity — the winter resort or cruise getaway. Sure, there is a limited market for beach clothes in December, but there are still customers who need their yacht-ready floral dresses and straw bags as the holidays arrive. (See Lily Pulitzer's debut resort offering.) Meanwhile, many designers produce more versatile collections that go beyond the commercially important season's title. (See the knit "swim" suits at Dior.)

For those of you planning to escape the unseasonable warmth up north for some regularly scheduled warmth down south, we've got you covered this winter — or more like uncovered. May we recommend a one-piece bathing suit? It hides holiday-related indulgences and is an instant lunch-ready outfit with a pair of delicate shorts. And don't be afraid to mix a preppy recycled sail beach bag with quirky bohemian sandals. For more formal resort activities (meals and star-gazing), pair an off-the-shoulder top with a floral maxi skirt. It's comfortable and structured at the same time, and will be just as useful once summer returns.

Hey, the days are getting longer already!
