If you think back to the highlights of the two Fashion Months that took place in 2015, many of them have one thing in common: Kanye West. Whether it was his Yeezy Season 1 and 2 presentations (both of which featured the debut of new music), his attendance at big-name shows like Alexander Wang, Balmain and Ralph Lauren (the latter resulting in an Internet-breaking Instagram photo), his sobbing live on BBC Radio in an interview about his friend and mentor Louise Wilson, his series of concerts at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris or his keeping the crowd at Givenchy's first New York show waiting an hour until he and wife Kim Kardashian arrived, Mr. West never failed to steal the spotlight. And as Fall 2016 Fashion Month quickly approaches, his total domination strategy is starting to come together.
On Friday, it was announced that West will headline the Governor's Ball Music Festival in New York City this June — the event's poster was even designed by the artist's creative agency, Donda — and he released two new tracks from his upcoming album, "Swish," which quickly flooded social media. Then, he made a major announcement on Twitter: "Swish" finally has a release date, and will drop on Feb. 11. While this might not ring a bell for some, fashion folks should raise an eyebrow, as it marks the first official day of New York Fashion Week.
Coincidence? We think not.
Though we don't yet know if West is planning a Yeezy Season 3 presentation in New York next month, we'd be shocked if the artist didn't have something up his sleeve for the album release to coincide with the week's events — especially considering how many of his friends and peers will be in town for the occasion. So, if you had hopes that West wouldn't be in total command of Fashion Month's headlines for a third season in a row, it's looking highly unlikely.
