Dolce & Gabbana has been known to emphasize "traditional" familial values in its artistic and editorial work. And lately, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have been on something of a maternal streak, casting grandmothers in their spring 2015 campaign and devoting their entire fall 2015 runway show to mothers. The fixation, we learned on Friday, has trickled down to its beauty marketing — and this time, they got longtime muse, iconic actress and 81-year-old mega-babe Sophia Loren involved.
Friday morning, Dolce & Gabbana launched its latest fragrance, Dolce Rosa Excelsa, with a short promotional film in which Loren stars. As with everything the Milan-based house does, the video is completely extravagant and romantic, epitomizing the Italian experience and culture. In the clip, directed by Italian Oscar-winning director Giuseppe Tornatore, Loren portrays the mother of a large Italian family — surprise! — tasked with restoring a Sicilian villa. The renovations, we learn, take time, and somehow necessitate several male members of the lineage stripping down to their underwear and spraying each other with garden hoses.
Sure, why not?
The plot culminates in a garden party, during which Loren's youngest son meets Rosa (played by model Kate King) and presents her with one long-stemmed red rose from the lawn. Through it all, Loren plays the part of the wise, energetic Italian matriarch quite convincingly, leaving us to wonder if she'll be back for a sequel of sorts. Do her son and Rosa get married and create a sprawling, perfectly Mediterranean family of their own? You'll just have to stay tuned.
