As soon as we got word that Rihanna would present her spring 2017 Fenty x Puma collection in Paris, we starting thinking about what sort of lavish affair she had planned. Would she take over a château or an extravagant loft apartment overlooking the Eiffel Tower? Would there be caviar, free-flowing champagne, crystal bowls filled with cigarettes (well, in her case, probably blunts) and towers of macarons every color of the rainbow? Perhaps her crew of model pals would ditch the dark makeup and giant black hoodies for something a bit more characteristic of the City of Light — more Brigitte Bardot and less Bad Gal Riri.
Well, we were at least half right: Rihanna took over the Hôtel Salomon de Rothschild — an ornate private mansion and historical monument in the 8th Arrondissement — to present a collection that could best be described as Marie Antoinette-meets-streetwear enthusiast (perhaps inspired by her recent CR Fashion Book cover?). The runway passed through a series of salons, each one decked out with columns, chandeliers and neoclassical art on the ceilings, and the models walked with an almost royal air: some cooling themselves with Puma-branded fans, others dripping in pearls or gemstones (a couple even carried diamonds between their teeth or had lips "pierced" with pearl barbells) and a select few, like Taylor Hill, wearing what was essentially a lace do-rag.
While the silhouettes were widely similar to the first Fenty x Puma outing, with lots of hoodies, lace-up corsets, skintight bodysuits and oversize outerwear for men and women, the color palette and materials were drastically different — and much softer. From flouncy silk teddies and broderie anglaise dresses in baby pink, to jacquard-esque florals in lavender, to lingerie-like slips in brown and army green, the range was equal parts sweet and street. The models' skin glowed with an iridescent pink flush, courtesy of one Pat McGrath. Ruffles, bows, cutesy ankle socks, tassels and ribbon detailing took the extravagance up a notch — not that we'd expect anything less from Rihanna, who took her bow with a beaming smile.
As guests exited, butlers in bow ties poured glasses of bubbling rosé out of a comically large bottles, which was a delightfully indulgent way to end a marathon day of shows. Let them drink Ace of Spades... that's how the saying goes, right?
