Now the Story of a Beloved TV Show, and the Costume Designer Who Brings It All Together
It's Arrested Development

Now the Story of a Beloved TV Show, and the Costume Designer Who Brings It All Together

It’s the final countdown to the premiere of Arrested Development season four–May 26 on Netflix, in case you didn’t already have it circled on your calendar–and we here at Fashionista understand your excitement… more than you’ll never know.

Since a lot of the humor comes from the characters’ costumes (who can forget Tobias dressed as a pirate, or Lindsay’s “Slut” tank top?) we hopped on the phone with the series’ costume designer, Katie Sparks. We asked her for all the details about working with the cast–and we think we may have gotten a tiny hint or two out of her about the new season.

Oh, and we definitely asked her about those denim cutoffs–you know the ones.

We just blue ourselves in excitement.

Meet Singapore Fashion Week’s Rising Stars

While there was plenty of international talent at the Audi Fashion Festival—Singapore Fashion Week, in laymen’s terms—the region’s emerging designers gave a solid performance. More than anything, I was truly impressed by the workmanship shown in the majority of the new-designer collections. Project Runway-level clothes these were not. Instead, these up-and-coming designers from China, Japan, Korea, Indonesia, and of course, Singapore itself, debuted well-constructed collection (often with a refreshing point of view). Click through to meet five stand-out designers.

The Row’s Cover-Star Fisherman Sweater Takes 90 Hours to Make

The Row’s Cover-Star Fisherman Sweater Takes 90 Hours to Make

There’s nothing I love so much as a soft, cozy, oversized sweater. Just ask my boyfriend, I steal his on the regular. So when I saw look 15 float down the stairs of an Upper East Side townhouse during The Row’s fall 2013 presentation last February, I was smitten.

I think stylist Anastasia Barbieri must feel the same way about this sweater. She put Natalia Vodianova in it for the June cover of WSJ. magazine, despite the fact that it’s pretty seasonally inappropriate.

It’s a special sweater, so we checked in with The Row to find out how something that luxe and that intricate gets made.

Hussein Chalayan Talks the Curse of the Fashion Cycle and Always ‘Doing Something New’

Lauded British designer Hussein Chalayan closed Audi’s Singapore Fashion Festival on Sunday night, the last of several international designers to show their fall 2013 collections during the week. While the clothes certainly wowed the audience–especially the convertible gowns that models dramatically unleashed while walking down the runway–it was even more fun to chat with Chalayan backstage after the show.

The deeply opinionated designer discussed everything from why he’ll probably never show at London Fashion Week again, to his ideal fashion cycle.

Victoria’s Secret Won’t Make Mastectomy Bras After All

Victoria’s Secret Won’t Make Mastectomy Bras After All

Back in January, 27 year old Allana Maiden started a Change.org petition for Victoria’s Secret to carry a line of mastectomy bras, inspired by the struggle her mom Debbie Barrett faced finding bras after her own surgery.

The petition gained steam fast–over 120,000 signatures in under a month–and Victoria’s Secret agreed to meet with Maiden and her mother. By all accounts, the meeting went well; the most consumer-recognized American brand agreed to fly the pair to their Columbus, Ohio headquarters and start research in producing mastectomy bra.

Now that the research has been completed, the decision has come down.

How Yahoo’s Acquisition Could Affect Tumblr’s Fashion Community

How Yahoo’s Acquisition Could Affect Tumblr’s Fashion Community

Today, Tumblr–home of gifs, memes, and NSFW photos–joins the ranks of corporate America: It’s just been bought by Yahoo for $1.1 billion.

Besides goofy cat videos and loads (seriously, loads) of porn, Tumblr also hosts one of the most passionate, creative, and irreverent fashion communities out there on the internets. So now the question is: How will that community, which so far has thrived on the free-for-all vibe that prevails at Tumblr, be affected by the new acquisition?

Peter Pilotto on Why He Wants Investment Sooner Than Later

The international talent at Singapore’s Audi Fashion Festival is impressive: Carolina Herrera opened the event, Hussein Chalayan will close it. Friday’s schedule featured Tsumori Chisato. And Saturday brought Peter Pilotto, the London-based designer whose lauded collections are just as much about the fabrics and detailing as they are about his memorable computerized prints.

I spoke with Pilotto–whose six-year-old business is on the cusp of some big things—just after the show.

Editor’s Pick: Leah’s Prim But Adorable Spring Dress

Even if my legs haven’t seen the sun in what feels like years, it’s actually warm out now which means it’s time to start wearing seasonally appropriate clothes. Like spring-y dresses.

I picked up this one at A.P.C. after some internal debate (“Does it make me look too much like a nurse? Or does it make me look like a chic French nurse and is that a good thing?”) and I’m glad I did.
