Style Advice I Learned from My Father
Father's Day Fun

Style Advice I Learned from My Father

Dads. They get some pretty funny ideas about style. Like that wearing Hawaiian shirts is acceptable year-round. Or that socks with sandals is a totally cool look. But, though they may not be the most obvious style icons in our life, they’ve certainly passed down their own brand of sartorial wisdom–for better or worse. So, in honor of Father’s Day, we asked our favorite fashion and celebrity friends–from Leandra Medine and Olivia Palermo to Wyclef Jean and Richard Chai–to share the most memorable style advice they ever got from their dad.

Ferragamo Lets You Customize a Classic

When you think of Ferragamo one of the first things that comes to mind is the Vara. Even if you don’t know its name you know what it looks like–it’s that mid-heeled sensible looking shoe with a stiff grosgrain bow at the top. Everyone from Marilyn Monroe to Margaret Thatcher has worn them. Your grandmother might have worn them, too, and if you were lucky, you stole them from her.

They’re the ultimate in granny chic (hell, I think they’re just plain chic–even though I hate that word) and they turn 35 this year. To celebrate, Ferragamo has launched an innovative new online project called L’Icona. The most compelling part of this project is that for the first time ever, Ferragamo is letting shoppers customize their own Varas.

Recap

10 Questions for The Rachel Zoe Project and It’s a Brad, Brad World

Since The Rachel Zoe Project and It’s a Brad, Brad World are on the same night now, we decided to combine our inquisitive recaps in to one. It’s like a double feature! Read our recaps below, starting with Zoe.

1. Since when is Rachel so much more low-maintenance than Rodger? She’s really just going to “throw on a dress and a turban” after Rodger spent forever agonizing over his polo outfit?

2. Why is Nacho the Polo Player Skyler’s “uncle?”

3. Doesn’t it seem like Rachel would have worn something more similar as Rodger and Sky Sky? Everyone at that polo match is wearing pastels and khakis. She looks like the wicked witch of the Berman family.

Burberry Fall 2013: Trench Kiss

It’s too bad Christopher Bailey’s fall 2013 Burberry show missed Valentine’s Day by only about four days. Dubbed ‘Trench Kiss’ by the designer, it was the most romantic, loved-up collection we’ve seen from the designer. Perhaps it was a love note to all of Bailey’s adoring fans–the front row included A-listers like Douglas Booth, Olivia Palermo, Melanie Laurent, Michelle Dockery, Rita Ora, Freida Pinto, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, and Kate Beckinsale.

There were hearts and leopard prints, which gave a quirky, girly twist to the brand’s signature trenches and daywear.

Topshop Unique Fall 2013: Brit Pop

Kudos to Topshop for pulling the best front row I’ve seen all week–hell, all month. Demi Lovato (on crutches after a foot injury), Daisy Lowe, Pixie Geldof, One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson and his girlfriend Eleanor Calder, Kate Bosworth and her husband, and Olivia Palermo all wedged in next to each other to take in the show, which opened with the totally-inescapable model of the moment Cara Delevingne.

Like the front row, the collection offered an eclectic mix.

Why Celebrities Are Not Getting Paid as Much to Sit Front Row

It’s not a secret that celebrities get paid to sit front row at fashion shows. We’ve covered this phenomenon in the past, noting that some celebs may get up to $100,000. And just this week, the New York Post reported on the topic again.

But contrary to the Post‘s story, which posits that brands are still shelling out for celebs, we believe this trend is on its way out.

Stuart Weitzman and Fergie Talk Inspiration and Regrets at Last Night’s Footwear News Awards

Titans of the footwear industry mingled alongside shoe-obsessed celebs like Victor Cruz, Fergie, Miranda Kerr, and more at last night’s 26th annual Footwear News Achievement Awards held at MoMa.

But the real star of the night was shoe designer Stuart Weitzman, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award. “I am not so naive as to not know that there are thousands of people in this industry who work as hard as I do,” said Weitzman of the honor. “Not everybody gets noticed, so it’s pretty humbling to be noticed.” Well, Weitzman has been noticed by everyone from Queen Elizabeth II to Beyonce, who recorded a special video congratulating him (“I’ve danced literally 1,000 miles in his amazing shoes,” she shared). So is there anyone Weitzman wishes he could see in his designs?

Business Casual: Introducing StyleUp, the ‘Pandora of Fashion’

Kendall is a former fashion editor who has written for NYmag.com, Lucky, InStyle, and NBC. She recently scrapped that glamorous life and is pursuing an MBA at MIT Sloan, in hopes of becoming an entrepreneur.

My second year at MIT Sloan is in full swing: classes, meetings, trips. All of that is wonderful, but what I care most about, what consumes my life is… StyleUp! I came to business school inspired by the Gilt Groupe and Rent the Runway women. I knew–we all know!–there is so much potential for fashion startups to take off, but I had no clue how to make it an actual business.
