“The casting was a little different for Season 7. They really focused on people’s portfolios much more seriously and scouted in a more professional manner. There’s a wide range of backgrounds — some designers who just came out of school, and some who’ve already had experience.” –Nina Garcia on Project Runway improving this season. Lord, we hope you’re right Nina because last season was a snoozefest. And you and Michael better not pull any disappearing acts.
Three’s a Charm: Dree Hemingway has just landed her third campaign of the season — this one’s for Gianfranco Ferre. {Refinery29}
Welcome, Henry: We love his Tweets. We love his tights. We all around just love him. Now Henry Holland’s blogging for Vogue UK. Feel free to over-share away. And we’re ever so curious about this “secret” meeting in Austria! {Vogue UK}
He’s Back!: Jeremy Scott is making a return stateside. He will be showing this season at Mac at Milk. We can’t wait! {Fashionologie via Twitter}
Wigging Out: Designer Charlie Le Mindu answers some questions about his outrageous wigs and what it’s like to dress Lady Gaga. {The Moment}

I’ve always had a ridiculous amount of respect for the business that Tory Burch has built and last September I was quite impressed with the groovier vibe her during her collection presentation. And now she’s gone and upped her cool factor even more by bringing on Subversive’s Justin Giunta as design director of jewelry.
Not to worry the Swarovski Award for Accessory Design winner will continue to create his amazing layered baubles for Subversive, and its lower-priced companion Deviated. Phew.
Says Tory to WWD of her new jewelry man, “Justin’s talent and handcrafted aesthetic will take us to the next level.” Yes and yes.
It will probably only take a few weeks after his first collection launches for holiday/resort before one of the necklaces becomes as ubiquitous on the streets of Manhattan as those black flats.
It’s not often that we have stories in common with our sibling site Going Concern (think of them as the Fashionista of the CFO/Accounting world.) Who, you ask, who could bring us together? Lady Gaga, of course. (And yes, we realize this is Gaga item #2 of the day.)
It seems that all that we love about Lady G, from the myriad costume changes to the pianos lit on fire, are the sorts of things that make accounting types go batty. Hence they named her Nightmare Client of the Day.
Turns out the tour isn’t really making any money even though every show is sold out, which you can read all about here.
Luckily, we’re not accountants so we can just hope that no one reins her in too much. We like our Gaga just fine the way she is, especially when she’s sporting bright yellow ombré hair.
From Alexander Wang to Miu Miu, we’ve been obsessing about the latest incarnations of the super long braid since September.
Karlie Kloss’ S/S ad for Herm√®s left Kate and me just a tad breathless when we first saw it. The only thing better than a gloriously pretty braid is one with an Herm√®s scarf woven into it. (The warm ocean setting sure doesn’t hurt either.)
Blake Lively, please take note. This would look fantastic on you as opposed to that tight, high Emmy nightmare we’re still trying to forget.
Of course, any scarf will do but one thing is certain you will be seeing lots of this look on the two of us as soon as our hair gets a bit longer. What about you?
Yesterday’s publishing news focused on one Jane (Aldridge) while today’s brings the official announcement of another’s: Mad Men costume designer Janie Bryant’s first book will be out in the fall of this year.
There’s no title yet, but she’s co-writing it with fashion writer Monica Corcoran. It will be filled with style tips for both women and men. And this is one lady we think is well worth listening to.
Here’s what the woman who makes Betty, Betty and Joanie, Joanie had to say: “I am so excited about developing this book. It has been so much fun! I really love helping people look their best through the right wardrobe, which allows them to feel great about themselves. It is all about wearing clothes that fit their character and the story they want to tell. Fashion allows each of us to express our creativity and unique style.”
Indeed, Janie. Indeed. Um, and how soon until Mad Men is back on the air? We need a Sterling, Cooper, Draper, Pryce fix stat.
To say that Francesco Clark is one of the most beloved people in the fashion and beauty industry would be a massive understatement. Anyone who can call him a friend is a lucky person indeed.
Fran is the creator of Clark’s Botanicals which we told you a bit about last spring. But here’s a little recap. Back in 2002, Francesco was working in the fashion department at Harper’s Bazaar when that summer he suffered a traumatic spinal cord injury in a swimming pool accident. Since that time he’s not only created one of the best skincare lines around (born from the changes in his skin post-accident) but become an ambassador for the Christopher Reeve Foundation while also undergoing myriad treatments for his own injury. Let’s just say Fran’s a total badass.
And tonight at 9 pm on the PBS series This Emotional Life, you’ll be able to see a little bit of his awesomeness for yourselves. We highly recommend you set the DVR and you’ll see exactly why designers, models, editors, and even the First Lady are fans.
I had a little chat with the man himself to give you a teaser.
Of all the things that 4 Times Square is known for, being a warm and welcoming environment is not one of them. That’s not to say it’s a horrible place by any means, it’s just a tad frosty.
Apparently, they’re trying to change that–at least internally–in 2010. The Observer‘s John Koblin (who’s become the go-to guy on all things Condé over the past year) reports that CEO Chuck Townsend is meeting with each and every magazine in the company for a little chit-chat.
Sounds standard, right? Actually, not so much at the publishing house where corporate camaraderie has never been the standard. This has become especially in January when big boss, Uncle Si, has been known to return to work from vacation with the “Si Surprise”, read: the folding of a popular magazine like Domino.
