When Rachel Zoe launched The Zoe Report, one of the first things we noticed was the “Parallel Universe” section and we wondered how some of her designer friends might feel about her promoting knock-offs of their work.
Today’s featured item is this silk and velvet satin Proenza dress which Rachel writes “moves her to tears.” Granted its price, $2300, moves us to tears.
But what really caught our eye was the “alternate” selection, this Erin Wasson x RVCA number which may not be an exact copy, but still…
Given her past indiscretions, like this and this, you really think the designer would start double checking her ‘inspirations’.

This morning the four big magazine publishing houses–Condé Nast, Hearst, Time Inc, Meredith– and Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp announced their much-talked about joint venture to create digital storefronts for their products and the technology to make them more viable on e-readers, tablets, and mobile devices.
The project doesn’t have a name yet, but people are referring to it either as Hulu or iTunes for magazines. As Gawker points out the Hulu reference doesn’t quite work because (at least for now) Hulu is free.
We can’t think of another instance where these companies have ever come together. But they obviously recognize that now is a time to pool their collective resources. Their goal to is to wrestle some control back from Amazon and Apple–a formidable task indeed.
Style.com got their hands on this video that Tavi shot for the Mulleavys about their Rodarte for Target collection. Needless to say, we once again find ourselves fairly jealous of a 13 year-old.
In it she gets to preview the collection and chat about it with the likes of Amy Astley and Cecelia Dean. She mingles with Jason Schwartzman, Elijah Wood, and Kirsten Dunst at the S/S 10 show.
And she gets to travel to the gorgeous plains of North Dakota where Laura and Kate shot the ad campaign and talk about the collection and its inspirations (Bonnie & Clyde, Harold & Maude, and Rosemary’s Baby) atop bales of hay.
This so beats just about anything we ever came close to doing at 13. Also we’re certain no one ever called us a “a mix between J.D. Salinger, Dorothy Parker, and Cindy Sherman” which the Mulleavys do in the Q&A that follows the video. Sigh.
“Dear Santa May I make an early Xmas reqst? found out Taylor Swift is 5’11″Can she open my Fall 2010 collctn? promise 2behave for a year xo PG” –from Prabal Gurung’s Twitter. This would pretty much make Abby’s heart sing. Let’s get this done.
This morning’s WWD has a big story about the now-flailing retail sector in Los Angeles–specifically areas like Third Street, the Melrose corridor (home to stores like Marc Jacobs, Maxfield and Alexander McQueen), Robertson, and Montana in Santa Monica.
Specialty boutiques have been shutting down at a more rapid rate lately. And commercial real estate is struggling–places that were supposed to open like Vera Wang and Phi have scrapped their plans due to the economy. While this isn’t exactly shocking news, what’s interesting to us is how much later this seems to be happening in Los Angeles.
“We kept reading in the news about economic losses, and cuts, cuts, and more cuts, so we decided to design dresses that did just that: cut,” Viktor Horsting to Vogue.com on the amazing Viktor & Rolf S/S 10 collection.
Of course it’s no secret how we feel about copying and counterfeiting in fashion.
While not all of you agree with us, it seems that Coach does. They’re taking a very aggressive legal stance against those producing and selling fakes of their bags, and they currently focusing on the great state of Texas, according to the Dallas Morning News. The company has recently filed two civil suits in the US District court in Dallas and similar ones in Houston.
According to the International AntiCounterfeiting Coalition, sales of fake goods cost retailers as much as $250 billion each year. And its president, Bob Barchiesi, says, “it [counterfeiting] supports forced child labor overseas, it supports the funding of terrorist organizations.” Whoa, that’s going a little deeper than we’ve ever even considered.
Over the past couple of years, it’s become all the rage to throw fashion events in China. Karl Lagerfeld has definitely been out in front on that one from Fendi’s show on the great wall to last week’s pre-fall extravaganza in Shanghai.
Now Calvin Klein is set to throw a big to-do in another Asian country, South Korea, showcasing S/S 10. In Seoul to be exact. We’re sure there’s been a very nice market for high fashion there for some time, but this the first we’ve heard of a designer staging a major event in the city.
The event will be held on Thursday and feature Francisco Costa’s womenswear collection in an installation designed by Korean-American artist Jean Shin. Italo Zucchelli’s menswear will be in a display by British artist Neville Wakefield. Both designers will be there for the big night.
We love seeing serious globalization in fashion. It really only serves the greater good. If only we were making the trip too.
It’s kind of surprising that Bottega Veneta hasn’t done a fragrance before and I actually thought I remembered one. Obviously, I made that up.
That’s all about to change now that they’ve partnered with Coty to create their first perfume. And Tomas Maier is pretty jazzed about it: “I’ve always loved fragrance and have very definite ideas about what I want to do.”
Coty Prestige is definitely the obvious choice, as they also just did Balenciaga’s latest scent. Plus, they always do massive business with every design house they work with.
Does the world need another designer fragrance? No, probably not. Will it sell? You betcha. Between this and the accessories money, we’re not worried about Bottega one little bit.
Now if only the price of the fragrance actually included a bag…
