Many modern brides walk the line these days of wanting to maintain some tradition in their weddings while also highlighting their individuality. For sartorial risk takers, bridal designers have plenty of options for brides who want something besides the usual full skirted ivory gown with a sweetheart neckline (not that there’s anything wrong with that, of course.)

Rules are falling by the wayside: bright color, interesting hemlines, and even pants (and a crop top!) walked down the aisle runway for spring 2013.

The Tribeca Film Festival kicked off last night in New York and it brought out a pretty chic red carpet. The party was held at the State Supreme Courthouse (a place where we’re sure none of the attendees ever want to be photographed during the day…anyway). The spring fashion was out in full force with lots of bare shoulders, short skirts, and crisp white looks. Models, designers, starlets, and media people all mingled, making us wonder how many deals were made last night over cocktails.

Someone is actually giving Karl Lagerfeld a mike and letting him talk on live TV. We can’t wait.

For the Kaiser’s latest project, he’s been tapped to give live commentary on French TV during coverage of Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee celebration.

On June 3, which is the main weekend when everyone will be partying for the Jubilee, Lagerfeld will join two French journalists on France 2 to give his two cents on the celebration. He did something similar during the Royal Wedding, and got upwards of 5 million viewers, according to WWD. I mean, wouldn’t you tune in for that?

Don’t expect him to insult her, though. It seems like he’s a pretty big fan. When he guest edited Metro this past February he drew a lovely sketch (at left) and said:

I think [Queen Elizabeth] looks very good in her recent photos even better than a few years ago – beautiful, a bit like Queen Mary. She looks a little bit like her grandmother – a more smiley version. In terms of what she wears, she’s come into herself a little bit more – whatever that is.

Just to put things into perspective, that issue of Metro is also where he made his now-infamous “Adele is fat” comment. We really think Karl needs to get his own reality TV show.

Vera Wang Bridal Spring 2013

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something…red? Yep, red bridal gowns are a thing for the spring 2013 season, if the latest shows are any indication. It’s bridal fashion week, and while the traditional white dress is still by far the most popular color, red has come out as a surprising trend for spring 2013. Vera Wang’s collection was entirely red with not a speck of white or ivory, running the gamut from scarlet to deep magenta. Oscar de la Renta, whose refreshing collection featured a lot of color (by bridal standards), also showed two red dresses.

What’s turning these designers onto a color that in Western countries generally screams “sex!” and not “bride”? It might just have something to do with China’s ever-increasing influence in the fashion world. Read more »

Yesterday was a beautiful summery day in New York City, perfect for a wedding–and I got to attend one, courtesy of Oscar de la Renta. While we didn’t get any cake or champagne, there were plenty of sartorial confections to feast on.

When looking at wedding gowns, they tend to blur together into one big white mass of tulle (well, for me at least). That wasn’t the case yesterday though, because Oscar’s spring 2013 bridal collection was full of some original and sometimes eye-popping ideas for bridal. Read more »

Nicki Minaj Is Launching Her First Fragrance

Tuesday, Apr 17, 2012 / 12:00 PM

Nicki Minaj has already had a pretty successful beauty career for someone who really isn’t in that industry. Her OPI nail polish collection is going strong this spring and she’s just been named as the new face (with Ricky Martin) of MAC’s Viva Glam lipstick. Nicki’s obviously a fan of beauty in all its incarnations and hinted late last year that a fragrance was in the works. Well, it’s happening now.

WWD reports that Minaj signed a deal with Give Back Brands LLC, which is the same licensee that produced Justin Bieber’s fragrance (which subsequently made approximately a zillion dollars.) “I have always been a huge fan of great fragrances,” Minaj told the paper. “This is yet another extension of my creative expression. I designed the scent and bottle with my Barnz in mind.” [Ed. note: We're assuming that is a typo and that she said "Barbz" not "Barnz."] No information is available yet about the name, the bottle design or the juice, but if we were the betting kind we’d assume that “pink” and “sweet” will be appropriate adjectives. One Million Moms (OMM), an organization who we suspect/hope has nowhere near one million supporters, has a new target for its homophobic rage. After failing to get Ellen DeGeneres–a LESBIAN–removed as JC Penney’s spokesperson, they’re turning their wrath on Urban Outfitters (who seems to always be offending someone).

The controversy involves the picture at left, which features two girls kissing in a “face holding embrace!” according to the latest OMM alert. It continues, “The content is offensive and inappropriate for a teen who is the company’s target customer.” And they’re asking supporters to boycott the retailer: “Tell them you will also no longer shop at their stores if you hear this type of advertising continues.”

Of course, UO isn’t exactly a strident supporter of LGBT rights. Read more »

Our Wedding Dress Suggestions for Angelina Jolie (And Her Right Leg)

Monday, Apr 16, 2012 / 6:15 PM

Have you heard? Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are getting married! We’ve already seen the ring–sort of–so now it’s time to start the process called “Guess the Dress Designer.” (We’re going on the assumption here, which could be far-fetched, that she will actually have a proper wedding with a fancy dress, etc. She may just get another tattoo, head to City Hall, and be done with it.)

But if Angelina is contemplating a dress, we’d like to help with her decision making process. We’ve taken into account some of her favorite designers, styles, and what style would best show off her now notorious famous right leg. (We’ve provided a bit of customization when necessary.) Click through to see Angelina in our choices. What do you think Angelina will wear? Read more »

It’s prom season, and whether you are going to your prom this year or you went 10 years ago, it’s a time in your life that’s usually associated with fond memories and, often, really bad fashion. Michelle Obama appeared in a segment on Ellen today in which Ellen DeGeneres and the FLOTUS compare their ’70s/early ’80s prom style. And as should be expected, their styles were very different. As should also be expected, Mrs. O was totally hot. You can watch the cute reveal video above, or click through for a shot of the dresses side by side. Read more »

While Pippa Middleton‘s famous butt has been her secret weapon up to this point, she may be in big trouble with French authorities for her involvement over the weekend with a real, actual weapon. The Daily Mail is reporting that Pippa was riding shotgun (sorry) in a convertible in Paris, when the driver of the car supposedly whipped out a semi-automatic handgun and started waving it at photographers. A witness reported it to French police.

According to the Mail, the incident occurred just hours after Pippa left the 29th birthday of “Paris fashion entrepreneur” Arthur de Soultrait (he’s the guy behind Vicomte A) at 6am.

While Pippa hasn’t been charged with anything yet, a “judicial source” told US Weekly, “If the evidence points to [Pippa Middleton's] involvement, she will be prosecuted.” The still-unidentified driver who wielded the gun could face up to seven years in prison if the gun is real, and up to two even if it’s fake. Arthur de Soultrait was in the backseat.

The Daily Beast reports that according to a statement from Soultrait’s rep, “It was not a real gun, it was just a stupid joke.” Pippa was also reportedly “grinning” during the whole incident. Oy. She’s certainly living up to her party girl reputation…

The upshot is that every passenger in the car potentially faces charges. The royal family has to be in crisis mode right now–between the stripper Middleton cousin and Pippa’s antics, some serious PR is probably in the works. We really hope that Pippa didn’t know about or support this stupid stunt. It also hightlights how out-of-hand the paparazzi is getting.
